Binge, Stream or Skip? Drama Review // Ghost Doctor 《고스트 닥터》

You can watch the trailer above or start watching  episode one here on Netflix . Warning! Spoilers ahead. I don't even remember the exact reason why I clicked on this show but I am sure glad that I did. The last time I watched Rain star in a drama would be Full House (that's like close to 20 years ago, gosh!) whereas I am more up-to-date with Kim Beom's dramas, the last being Law School. Not gonna lie but after watching the trailer, I actually held a bit of expectations for this series and I have to say, they delivered! Let's skip all the fluff and I'll go straight down to dissect why I think this series is bingeable in the sections below. Synopsis (taken from AsianWiki): Cha Young-Min (Rain) is a genius doctor, but he is arrogant and selfish. One day, he gets involved in an unexpected case. Due to the unexpected case, his spirit possesses another doctor's body. These two doctors are complete opposites, with opposite personalities and medical abilities. The

Warning! Spoilers ahead.

If you had watched Yanxi Palace and are a shipper of Fuca Fuheng and Wei Yingluo, then you would definitely be stoked to know that they reunited as a couple in this series. Well, for those who had not watched Yanxi Palace, I would definitely encourage that you watch that and this. Although I do recommend this series, it feels 2% lacking to be classified as bingeable so I would say it is streamable however, not too far off from being bingeable. This historical series contain all the essentials that you would expect, a lower class female lead and royal male lead, court politics, inner palace politics, etc. Perhaps I have watched too many that I felt that the politics part were somewhat lacking, like it doesn't invoke much emotions. Usually I get agitated watching historical dramas because the bad guys seemed to be winning all the time and I was waiting for the tables to be turned so it kept me on my toes. But this ones, was a bit lacking. On the bright side, it was perhaps due to the 2% lack in court politics that we get much sweeter scenes in the romance department.

Synopsis (taken from Dramawiki):

Set during the Ming dynasty during the rule of Yongle Emperor, it tells the story of a young girl named Yao Zijin, who entered the palace to become a maid of the food bureau. In the deep palace, she remains determined and slowly work her way up while perfecting her craft; while friendship and romance at the same time. Through her romantic entanglement with Zhu Zhanji, the drama also showcases the historical achievements and family life of three outstanding emperors of the Ming Dynasty, portraying a gourmet Forbidden City full of rich family affection, friendship, love and humanity.

The Great:

The couple to ship in this of course! They've had such great chemistry since Yanxi Palace which was why it was so heartbreaking in that drama, yet so heartwarming to see them finally be together again in this series. Oh~ The sweet romance.

The Good:

If you've ever watched animes like Shokugeki no Soma and Yakitate Japan, where they not only showcase delicacies but also show you part of the process. You get to learn the names of different dishes and how they make certain dishes in the past without modern technology, via the art of cooking.

There isn't exactly a very evil character nor an evil faction so you don't get too agitated while watching. A strong and clever female lead is always welcomed, so that you feel the triumph when she beats everyone else who tries to take her down with her own strengths and wits. Some characters just make you roll your eyes at them, but that's about it.

The Bad:

What is good about this show is also a bad point. Because there isn't really an evil faction, the politics in this show, whether it is in the kitchen or in court, is too tamed compared to other period pieces so you don't really get a build up, then a climax and then an underdog counter attack from the protagonist at the end.

The Ugly:
